Detailed itinerary
1. Day
Arrival in Lhasa | Scenic Drive to the Heart of Tibet (3,660m)

You can choose to fly directly to Lhasa from your hometown, via Mainland China, or through Kathmandu. Flights from Kathmandu are the most common international route, offering spectacular aerial views of the Himalayas. Alternatively, connecting flights through Mainland China are available for travelers coming from other international destinations. Regardless of your departure point, arriving in Lhasa will be a remarkable experience as you begin your journey to the heart of Tibet.

Upon arrival at Gongkar Airport, our Tibetan guide will greet you. After completing immigration formalities, you’ll begin a scenic 6o km drive to Lhasa, which takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. Lhasa, the ancient and spiritual heart of Tibet, sits at an altitude of 3,660 meters. After checking into your hotel, it’s essential to take some time to rest and acclimatize to the high altitude. Hydrate well and allow your body to adjust to the new environment. The first day is key for your comfort and safety in Lhasa.

In the afternoon, you can enjoy a light stroll around the hotel area. This gentle walk will help you ease into the altitude while taking in some of the local sights. The day is meant to be a relaxed introduction to Tibet, ensuring you are well-prepared for the adventure ahead. Accommodation: Banakshol Hotel (3-star) or a hotel of similar standard | Meals: Enjoy daily breakfast.

Travel Note:
If you’re traveling to Tibet via Kathmandu, please note that you will need to add 5 extra days to your itinerary for visa processing at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. To allow sufficient time for visa approval, we recommend arriving in Kathmandu on a Sunday. This ensures early processing and helps avoid delays, giving you the necessary time to complete the visa formalities before continuing your journey to Tibet.

2. Day
Discover the Spiritual Heart of Lhasa: Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Barkhor Street

After breakfast, embark on an unforgettable journey through Lhasa’s spiritual heart, beginning with the awe-inspiring Potala Palace, one of Tibet’s most iconic landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Perched at 3,700 meters (12,139 feet) on Marpo Ri Hill, the palace was once the winter residence of the Dalai Lama. The palace’s architecture is an extraordinary blend of Tibetan, Indian, and Nepalese influences, and it is divided into two main sections: the White Palace and the Red Palace. The White Palace was once the administrative seat of the Dalai Lama, while the Red Palace is dedicated to religious practice and houses numerous chapels, statues, and murals that reflect Tibet’s rich Buddhist culture. Wander through its expansive courtyards, and you’ll be surrounded by breathtaking views of Lhasa and the surrounding plateau, a visual reminder of the majestic beauty of Tibet.

As you continue your exploration, head to Jokhang Temple, often referred to as the spiritual center of Tibetan Buddhism. Built in the 7th century by King Songtsen Gampo, the temple houses the Jowo Rinpoche statue, an image of Buddha that is one of Tibet’s most revered religious relics. Pilgrims from all corners of Tibet journey to Jokhang to make offerings and perform kora (the sacred circumambulation of the temple). Inside the temple, you’ll find a peaceful yet vibrant atmosphere, as monks chant prayers and devotees light butter lamps. The temple’s serene ambiance is an ideal place to reflect on Tibet’s deep Buddhist heritage. As you walk through the temple’s grand halls and small chapels, take in the centuries-old artwork that decorates the walls, offering insight into Tibetan religious practices and beliefs.

Afterward, take a leisurely stroll through Barkhor Street, the historic market that encircles Jokhang Temple. This lively street is the beating heart of Lhasa, where locals and visitors alike shop for a wide range of traditional Tibetan goods. From handcrafted prayer beads to intricately painted thangkas (religious scroll paintings), Barkhor Street is a treasure trove of Tibetan artistry and culture. As you walk through the bustling market, you’ll witness Tibetans, both locals and pilgrims, performing kora while weaving through the maze of shops. The street is lined with small stalls selling everything from yak wool products to prayer flags, offering a chance to take home unique and meaningful souvenirs. Along the way, you can also stop for a cup of traditional butter tea, a Tibetan staple made from tea leaves, yak butter, and salt, offering you a taste of local flavors.

The energy and atmosphere of Barkhor Street provide an immersive experience into the daily life of Lhasa’s residents. It’s a vibrant intersection of spirituality, culture, and commerce where you can witness the harmonious blend of Tibet’s ancient traditions and modern influences.

In the evening, after a day of exploration, enjoy a traditional Tibetan meal in one of the local restaurants. Try dishes like momo (steamed dumplings filled with meat or vegetables), thukpa (noodle soup), or tsampa (roasted barley flour), which are staple foods of the region. Afterward, head back to your hotel and relax, reflecting on the spiritual and cultural depth of Lhasa that you’ve experienced throughout the day.

The exploration of these sacred landmarks offers more than just sightseeing; it is an opportunity to deeply connect with Tibet’s ancient spiritual traditions and witness the unique culture that has shaped this remote Himalayan region for centuries. Whether through the awe-inspiring Potala Palace, the devout atmosphere of Jokhang Temple, or the lively energy of Barkhor Street, Lhasa provides a journey that will leave you with lasting memories of this extraordinary city. Accommodation: Banakshol Hotel (3-star) or a hotel of similar standard | Meals: Enjoy daily breakfast.

3. Day
Explore the Majestic Norbulingka, Drepung Monastery, and Sera Monastery in Lhasa

After breakfast, begin your journey through Lhasa’s sacred sites with a visit to Norbulingka, the former summer palace of the Dalai Lama, situated at an altitude of 3,650 meters (11,975 feet). This lush, expansive garden complex spans 36 hectares and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Norbulingka is a peaceful retreat, surrounded by magnificent gardens and adorned with intricately designed palaces and chapels. Originally built in the 18th century, the palace served as the residence of the Dalai Lama during the summer months. The palaces within the complex feature Tibetan-style architecture, with vibrant frescoes and intricate woodwork that reflect the spiritual and cultural essence of Tibetan Buddhism. Take your time wandering through the palace’s halls, where the Dalai Lama once resided, and admire the beautiful landscapes that surround this serene location. The site is also home to several chapels dedicated to Tibetan Buddhist deities, making it not only a cultural treasure but a place of deep spiritual significance.

Next, head to Drepung Monastery, one of Tibet’s largest and most significant monasteries, located at 3,800 meters (12,467 feet). Founded in 1416 by Jamyang Choeje, Drepung once housed more than 10,000 monks, making it one of the most influential centers of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery is spread over a hillside, with its whitewashed walls and red rooftops offering spectacular views of the surrounding Lhasa Valley. As you explore the vast monastery, you will visit its grand assembly halls, where monks gathered to study and debate religious texts. The monastery also contains several chapels filled with murals depicting scenes from Tibetan Buddhist teachings and legends. Within the walls of Drepung, the spiritual atmosphere is palpable, with monks chanting prayers and offering rituals, and pilgrims making their way through the monastery to seek blessings. This sacred site offers a deep dive into Tibetan monastic life and religious practice, with its peaceful environment fostering contemplation and reflection.

In the afternoon, proceed to Sera Monastery, located at 3,700 meters (12,139 feet), where the vibrant intellectual atmosphere will captivate your attention. Founded in 1419, Sera Monastery is one of Tibet’s “great three” monastic universities and is famous for its philosophical debates. These debates, held daily in the monastery’s courtyards, offer a unique spectacle. Monks engage in animated discussions on Buddhist philosophy, using dramatic hand gestures, claps, and verbal challenges to make their points. It is an incredible opportunity to witness the mental agility and fervent dedication of Tibetan monks as they explore the nuances of Buddhist teachings. Visitors can watch as these debates unfold, immersing themselves in the intellectual rigor of Tibetan Buddhism. Sera is not only known for its debates but also for its beautiful architecture, which includes towering prayer halls and intricate murals depicting Buddhist teachings. As you wander through the grounds, you’ll encounter the monastery’s many shrines, chapels, and statues, each adding to the spiritual energy that permeates the monastery.

After a fulfilling day of discovery, head back to your hotel to unwind and enjoy some well-deserved rest. In the evening, savor a traditional Tibetan meal at one of the local restaurants, experiencing the authentic flavors of the region. Sample local delicacies like momo (steamed dumplings filled with meat or vegetables), thukpa (noodle soup), and tsampa (roasted barley flour), which are staples of the Tibetan diet and offer a delicious insight into the region’s culinary traditions. This meal will provide a perfect end to a day of spiritual and cultural discovery in Lhasa.

Your visit to these three monasteries will deepen your understanding of Tibetan Buddhism, offering not just a visual journey through stunning architecture but also an intellectual and spiritual experience that will leave a lasting impression. Whether exploring the tranquil gardens of Norbulingka, the sacred halls of Drepung, or the lively debates of Sera, Lhasa offers an immersive journey into one of the most unique cultures and spiritual practices in the world.
