A leisurely mountain biking journey through the scenic Paro Valley leads us to the historic ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, offering a blend of adventure and cultural discovery. This easy ride offers an excellent opportunity to acclimatize and enjoy scenic views of the surrounding landscapes. The day concludes with check-in at your comfortable hotel in Paro, where you can relax and enjoy the warm Bhutanese hospitality. Start your first full day of mountain biking from Paro, tackling the climb to Bhutan’s highest road pass, Chelela Pass, at 3,810 meters. The route begins right from the hotel, or you can opt for a shorter start by driving 20 km closer to the pass to ease into the ride. The zigzag uphill road stretches for 38 km and features smooth pavement with some rough, unpaved sections. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking landscapes of dense forests and distant Himalayan peaks. Regular rest stops will allow you to refuel, hydrate, and acclimatize to the altitude as you ascend. Reaching the top of Chelela Pass after approximately six hours of mountain biking is a rewarding experience. The summit offers stunning views of Bhutan’s iconic mountains, Chomolhari and Jichu Drake, on clear days. Take a well-earned break at the pass with a cup of hot masala tea, perfect for the often windy and cold conditions. The surrounding prayer flags fluttering against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks add to the spiritual and visual charm of the location. The descent to Haa Valley is a thrilling 29 km ride that passes through pristine alpine forests and picturesque Bhutanese villages. This downhill stretch, combined with the serene beauty of Haa Valley, makes the effort worthwhile. With a total of 67 km (42 miles) covered today, including an ascent of 1,515 meters and a descent of 1,129 meters, this challenging yet fulfilling mountain bike tour takes 8 to 9 hours. The ride is made up of 80% paved road and 20% unpaved sections with some rough terrain. End the day with a hearty meal and a well-deserved rest at your hotel in Haa Valley. Today, enjoy a wonderful and picturesque ride through the Haa Valley, one of Bhutan’s most stunning regions. Only opened to foreigners in 2002, this "Hidden Rice Valley" remains largely untouched and offers a unique glimpse into Bhutan’s pre-Buddhist history and animist traditions. The valley is culturally rich, featuring ancient temples, a dzong built in 1915, and the guardian deity Ap Chendu, who is still worshipped. The ride begins with a long but mostly downhill journey of approximately 81 km, taking between 6-7 hours depending on the group’s pace. The road is paved but watch out for potholes, and there are some undulating sections. After the challenging ascent of the previous day, today’s ride feels relatively easier and is one of the most stunning parts of the trip. The Haa Valley is peaceful, filled with traditional Bhutanese farmhouses and terraced fields of rice and potatoes, providing plenty of opportunities to stop for photographs. After a refreshing lunch break along the way, there are some small climbs and descents as we pass through side valleys. The route eventually leads us to Chuzom Sa, where the roads from Paro, Haa, Thimphu, and south to Phuntsholing converge. Above the Pa Chu river, three beautifully crafted stupas in Nepalese, Tibetan, and Bhutanese styles stand as a peaceful reminder of Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage. Once we reach the river and join the main highway, traffic increases, so we transfer by van for the final 30 km to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. With a total distance of 81 km (50 miles) covered, including an ascent of 750 meters and a descent of 2,029 meters, this ride blends scenic beauty and cultural richness, taking 6-7 hours. The route consists of 80% paved roads and 20% unpaved sections with potholes. End the day with a relaxing evening in Thimphu, Bhutan’s vibrant capital. Accommodation: The Willows Hotel or a hotel of similar standard | Meals: Enjoy daily Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
We begin the day with a morning bike ride exploring the outskirts of Thimphu. Starting from the town, we cycle past the Tashicho Dzong, then tackle a steep but short climb leading to a quiet road towards Cheri. The route meanders through serene forests, with a couple of additional short and steep climbs. Along the way, we pass a large painted stone depicting Guru Rinpoche before reaching a chorten at Cheri. A refreshing snack stop allows us to refuel before cycling back to Thimphu for lunch. In the afternoon, we set off to explore the vibrant streets and cultural landmarks of Thimphu. By bus, we visit some of the key landmarks, including the iconic Memorial Chorten, one of the most prominent structures in Thimphu. If open, we’ll explore the Tashichho Dzong, the seat of Bhutan’s government. Later in the day, we drive up to Buddha Point, where a towering Buddha statue provides breathtaking views of the entire Thimphu Valley. With a total distance of 33 km (20 miles) covered, including an ascent of 821 meters and a descent of 810 meters, this day’s ride takes approximately 4.5 hours. The route consists entirely of paved roads, though watch out for potholes along the way. Wrap up the day with a peaceful evening in Thimphu, reflecting on the sights and experiences. Accommodation: The Willows Hotel or a hotel of similar standard | Meals: Enjoy daily Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
We begin early today to avoid Thimphu’s morning rush hour. The ride starts with a short, gentle section of "Bhutanese flat" terrain (undulating terrain) for 5 km as a warm-up. From here, we catch glimpses of the Simthoka Dzong across the valley, and the climb to Dochu La begins just beyond. Entering the forest, we follow a well-maintained blacktop road that steadily ascends all the way to the pass. Climbing in Bhutan requires a slow, rhythmic pace with frequent breaks to enjoy the views and stay refreshed. The climb features an average gradient of 4.8%, offering a manageable challenge with rewarding views. At the top of the pass, we are greeted by 108 stupas and countless prayer flags fluttering in the wind. On clear days, we may even glimpse Bhutan’s highest peak, Gankar Punsum (7,500 m). After reaching the pass at 21 km, the rest of the day consists mainly of a 39 km downhill descent on smooth roads to Lobesa, where we enjoy lunch. As we descend, the landscape transforms into the more sub-tropical Punakha Valley, revealing the famous Chimmi Lhakhang temple below, built to honor the renowned Lama Drukpa Kunley. Following lunch, we continue with a 12 km undulating ride to Punakha Dzong. Known as the winter base for Bhutan’s government due to its lower altitude and milder weather, the Punakha Dzong dates back to the 15th century and sits at the confluence of the Mo and Po Rivers. After exploring this magnificent fortress, we have a short 10-minute drive to our hotel. With a total distance of 72 km (43 miles), an ascent of 1,100 meters, and a descent of 2,200 meters, this day takes approximately 6 hours. The ride is entirely on paved roads, though the last 12 km includes some potholes to watch out for. Accommodation: Meri Phuensum Resorts or a hotel of similar standard | Meals: Enjoy daily Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
Today’s ride takes you on an exhilarating journey to the breathtaking Gangtay Valley, crossing the Lawa La Pass (3,285 m). Covering a distance of 75 km (46.5 miles) with an ascent of 2,211 meters and a descent of 746 meters, this is one of the most demanding yet rewarding days of the trip. While most of the road is paved, some sections are rough, making the ride a true test of endurance and skill. After breakfast at the hotel, we begin our journey with a 13 km stretch of undulating terrain leading to the main road. This initial section is narrow and uneven, requiring focus and careful navigation. Once on the main road, the route becomes gentler for the next 10 km, bringing us to a bridge where the long climb toward the Pele La Pass begins. This ascent takes us through dense tropical forests alive with the sounds of cicadas, offering sweeping views of rolling hills. The terrain alternates between smooth tarmac and rugged patches as we pass Nobding and the quaint hamlet of Dungding Nesa. Beyond Dungding Nesa, we turn off the main road and tackle a challenging 1.5 km climb to the Lawa La Pass, marked by a striking white chorten. Upon reaching the summit in the late afternoon, take a moment to soak in the panoramic views before gearing up for the descent. Arriving in Phobjikha after an 8- to 9-hour ride, we are rewarded with breathtaking scenery and cultural richness. Explore the serene glacial valley, known for its pristine wetlands and as the winter haven for the endangered Black-necked cranes. A visit to the historic Gangtey Monastery and a stroll along the nature trail provide the perfect end to the day. Relax at a cozy guesthouse, reflecting on the physical challenges and the incredible beauty of the journey. Accommodation: Dewachen Hotel or a hotel of similar standard | Meals: Enjoy daily Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
Today’s journey begins with a scenic drive, covering 10 km by bus to the top of the Lawa La Pass (3,353 m). Upon reaching the pass, we hop onto our bikes and descend 1.5 km to a junction. From there, it’s a smooth 2.5 km, 30-minute climb to the top of the Pele La Pass, crossing the Black Mountains. This pass marks the border between Western Bhutan (where we’ve been cycling) and Central Bhutan, as we transition into new landscapes. Covering a distance of 71 km (44 miles) with an ascent of 680 meters and a descent of 1,895 meters, this ride offers a mix of exhilarating downhill sections and challenging climbs. This initial section is narrow and uneven, requiring focus and careful navigation. Once on the main road, the route becomes gentler for the next 2.5 km, bringing us to a bridge where the long climb toward the Pele La Pass begins. This ascent takes us through dense tropical forests alive with the sounds of cicadas, offering sweeping views of rolling hills. The terrain alternates between smooth tarmac and unpaved sections as we pass Nobding and the quaint hamlet of Dungding Nesa. The next 26 km is a thrilling winding downhill ride, mostly on good roads but with some unpaved sections. We pass through Chendebji, home to a large chorten modeled on Nepal’s Bodnath Stupa, before continuing into warmer regions with lush vegetation and waterfalls along the roadside. The road continues undulating through narrow valleys, with dramatic views of Trongsa nestled far below. A viewpoint offers stunning panoramic views of the valley, showcasing the steep-sided terrain. After a stop at the viewpoint, it’s only 13 km to our hotel, though the last 7 km are an uphill challenge. Please note that parts of the road from the Pele La Pass may not be fully completed, especially after heavy rains, and the tour leader will determine where cycling is possible. In spring 2018, the group cycled this entire route successfully. Accommodation: Tendrel Resorts or a hotel of similar standard | Meals: Enjoy daily Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
Our journey continues with one of the most rewarding and scenic rides, leading us from Trongsa to the stunning Bumthang Valley. We start biking from the hotel, and the climb begins immediately as the road zigzags upwards into the mountains. The ascent to the Yotong La Pass (3,425 m) covers 21 km and takes approximately 4.5 hours. From the top, we are rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the Chumey Valley below. After reaching Yotong La, we enjoy a 24 km descent into the Chumey Valley. The valley is dotted with beautiful Bhutanese farmhouses and is famous for its traditional weaving culture. It’s a picturesque ride, and we may have the chance to see locals weaving at their looms. At the end of the Chumey Valley, we reach a junction where we take the left fork, which winds through a pleasant pine forest for 4 km, leading us to the Keke La Pass (2,700 m). The descent from Keke La into the stunning Bumthang Valley is a highlight of the day. We mountain bike through the town of Jakar, with its vibrant bazaar, before crossing a bridge and continuing the final 4 km along the valley to our hotel..
