After breakfast, begin today’s trek from Lemithang, descending gently through lush forests of spruce and birch. The trail winds steeply down the Zamdo Nangi Chhu valley, covering approximately 11 km in about 4 hours, with an altitude loss of 1,050 meters.

The forests are thick for several hours as we descend beside the river, eventually reaching the pastures of the outer Laya farmers. A suspension bridge along the trail leads us to the main village, which is situated on a wide ridge several hundred meters above the Mo Chu River.

Laya village, home to approximately 1,000 inhabitants, is isolated and snowed-in during winter. Life in this cooler region relies heavily on yaks for meat, wool, and dried cheese, along with one annual crop of barley, mustard, and turnips. The trail gradually leads us to the Karakachu La Pass (5,165 m), where spectacular panoramic views of towering peaks such as Jejekanhphu Gang (7,300 m) and Tsenda Kang (7,100 m) unfold before us. These dramatic mountains feed the pristine lakes, hanging glaciers, and river systems that flow through the region.

From the Karakachu La pass, descend through lateral moraine and dense forests of rhododendron. The trail descends to the valley floor, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding natural beauty. After a further 2 to 3 hours of walking through the valley, we reach our camp at Tarina, nestled in a serene clearing surrounded by lush forests.

After breakfast, embark on today’s trek from Tarina to Green Lake (4,450 m). The journey covers 14 km and takes around 7 hours. You will ascend 530 meters and descend 420 meters, navigating a mix of challenging ascents, gentle descents, and captivating Himalayan landscapes.

The trail begins by following the river downstream, leading into a valley where the dramatic effects of past landslides are evident. These landslides have cleared vast swathes of forest, leaving behind rugged rubble fields that contrast with the surrounding greenery. Ascend over a ridge to reach Woche (3,940 m), the first village in the Lunana region. Here, observe traditional Bhutanese life as families thresh crops like wheat or buckwheat using age-old techniques.

Begin with a steady ascent through alpine meadows dotted with dwarf rhododendron bushes, eventually reaching Keche La Pass after approximately 3 to 4 hours. This high point offers sweeping views of the cirque-like valleys behind and distant, unnamed peaks ahead. From this point, the descent begins, initially steep and winding, leading past the stunning turquoise lake of Om Tsho. The trail then traverses rocky cliffs and descends toward the valley floor. As you descend, be mindful of your footing, as rhododendron roots hidden beneath moss and overgrowth can make the terrain challenging.

The trek covers about 14 kilometers and takes approximately 6 to 7 hours. During the journey, you will ascend 750 meters and descend 200 meters.

From Tempe La, the trail follows the Nikka Chhu river, weaving through picturesque forests of rhododendron and pine. The terrain becomes more moderate, with relatively level paths as you continue toward Marothang. Along the way, you’ll pass through yak pastures and charming wooden bridges, offering glimpses of the rural beauty of Bhutan.

At Marothang, you’ll encounter the first shop since Laya—a cozy wooden house beside the river, offering a chance to rest and replenish supplies. If yaks were used for earlier parts of the trek, they will be replaced by horses here for the final leg of the journey.
