The Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Trek offers an extraordinary journey into one of Nepal’s most remote and culturally preserved regions. Upper Mustang, formerly known as the Kingdom of Lo, lies in the rain-shadow of the Himalayas. This isolated area, which opened to tourism only in 1992, has preserved its ancient Tibetan-Buddhist culture and unique landscapes.
A central highlight of this trek is the Tiji Festival, held annually in Lo Manthang. This vibrant, three-day festival depicts the triumph of good over evil through colorful rituals and dramatic masked dances. The festival draws from the legend of Dorje Jono, a powerful deity renowned for overcoming demons to reestablish harmony and peace.
On the first day, the festival begins with the sound of Tibetan horns, known as Dhungchen. Monks from Chhode Monastery lead a procession to the main square. Here, a large Thangka (sacred Buddhist painting) is displayed. The highlight of the day is the “Tsa Chaam” dance. This dance reenacts the story of Dorje Jono’s victory over malevolent forces.
On the second day, the “Nga Cham” dance continues the tale of Dorje Jono. This day also features local women showcasing their traditional attire and jewelry. Their presence adds to the festival’s vibrant atmosphere.
On the third day, the “Rha Chaam” dance symbolizes the ultimate vanquishing of evil forces. The festival concludes with Dorje Sonam, the monk portraying the deity, hurling an effigy made of Tsampa (barley). This effigy symbolizes the demon Ma Tam Ru Ta. This act signifies the restoration of balance and ends with joyful music, dance, and celebration.
Participating in the Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Trek provides a unique chance to experience these traditional cultural events while exploring the stunning, untouched landscapes of the Himalayas. This trek is a rare opportunity to witness ancient Buddhist practices set against breathtaking scenery.
